Champagne is from France. Carboniste is California.
“What are the limits of what sparkling wine can be?” Dan Person poses. “We want to create a revolution.”
Carboniste Gomes Vineyard Albariño Extra Brut
As Carboniste’s flagship wine, the sparkling Albariño “has accomplished our goal of making a wine that is truly inspired by the terroir that we have in California,” Jacqueline says. “We don’t want to make something Champagne-like, but just the opposite.
The Gomes family has been farming on Andrus Island since the 1800’s when they immigrated from Portugal, where Albarino (Alvarinho) is grown extensively in Vinho Verde near the Atlantic Ocean. This site has deep, rich soil, well fed from the Sacramento River. It is dry farmed without cultivation and is transitioning to organic farming certification.
Dry and a touch briny, this light and fresh sparkling wine boasts notes of gooseberry, kumquat, and stonefruit blossom. It is a fantastic aperitif and is guaranteed to pair with so many favorite recipes including grilled octopus!
